Thank you for posting this video. Much respect. As you know or someone already stated that Pedro A. Campos was featured in Rosie's Yo Soy Boricua. Wow, where did you find out about the mispronunciation of words with r's and s'? I may have to check out the books you recommended. What about Agueybana?

Excellent videos. I'm a mixed Nuyorican though almost nobody knows it looking at me because I'm very pale. I recently had a DNA Tribes test done in which my highest "deep ancestry" (500 years ago) results are from South Africa -- the Venda and South Sotho. Now, I know the slaves came from West Africa so this had me wondering if perhaps my relatives might have been among those mentioned in the book in the video, "They Came Before Columbus". Unfortunately, I'll never know. Intriguing stuff!

thanks for the info. that explains why this married couple thought I was puerto rican too. it kinda threw me off guard cuz they assumed I was such cuz of my cherokee & black foot roots. anyways we share the same african background. my godmother who is puerto rican too shared with me a little bit of the african heritage too. so now it all make sense to me now which is cool.

But the key here is not about division-- it's about recognition! How many history books, lessons. comments have you heard all emphasizing the Spanish/Euro influence on P.R.? All of the influencing cultures are important, and some are just often overlooked, or ignored due to ingrained racism, which stems from castes established during colonial reign. There's no irony there, the point is to properly illuminate an under-recognized part of the rich Puerto Rican heritage.

WOW great piece! I'm so proud to see a video that opens the eyes of Boriquas who choose to ignore the wonderful range of contributions Afroboriquas have made, and CONTINUE to make to the culture & heritage of Puerto Rico! These great contributions should be acknowledged & respected by all people and should further serve as an example of what all humans can achieve when confronted with adversity & racism! These contributions are exactly what being Boricua means to me! Keep up the wonderful work!

tainos are native to P.R. but understand this also. tainos are african at its core. coming from the black indian tribes of north and south america. remember when u say indian you are also saying black

what a great lesson and an enlightening view. I was watching HBO on the musicians of Motoen and the alluded to the fact that many of their beats were influenced by the latin sound which was influenced by the african... The combined sound??? GLORIOUS. I am drawn to a song that implements such sounds and it reminds me of who I realy am and my history and ancestry..we arent even aware when we get that feeling..it is something deep within us reminding us of home..Africa

Why do people fail to understand this. There are Puerto Ricans every damn shade of da spectrum and lily white to jet black. We are not a uniform culture, and we are very diverse.

"Where's your grandmother?" and don't hate on NYricans they're as Boricuas as me. Nacido y criado en la islita del encanto con orgullo.Saludos Boricuas desde Korea

OYE! no body said all Puerto Ricans were Black, my point is the opposite, That all puerto ricans are not Marc Anthony, look alikes, that in fact there are puerto ricans that are black. Pay attention and watch the video before you make comments.

By: PUERTORICANJAIME. on 11 Oct 08, 01:10:15
Being Puerto Rican its not just our skin color but its who we are. 10% of puerto ricans are black. The other percentage adds on to the spaniards and the Taino indians.I myself am not from the african backround, i'm spaniard rican! born and raised on the island and still here tell this day. not all all The people from puerto rico are black

By: holypun. on 14 Sep 08, 16:54:57
as Puerto Rican we are a mixture of many races African is definitely a significant part of what we are our people our food our music religion even language is all African influences many would even say African based slavery happened in PR people fought and died to end it this connection in clear in Jazz, Hip Hop and even in the way we have struggled for freedom (compare the Black Panthers to the Young Lords)

I am a fair skinned boricua and I know we come in all flavors....this documentary is not based on any other place than In Puerto Rico...why is it that people always put their two sense in.....I understand we all have things going in our own countries...but if any one here is complaining then make your own documentary with white or DR or whatever..and if you reply to my post make sure you can spell and are educated..thanks....besos.....lolz

Blacks rule the world even when they fight us down
By: JYoung3rd. on 04 Sep 08, 22:28:19
yep that is big we are only 13% here in the US.
By: tinyt1112. on 04 Sep 08, 12:06:41
I think that it is seriously ridiculous that we are arguing over the amount of African heritage that is in our blood as Puerto Ricans. What makes us Puerto Rican is not our skin color; it's who we are.We are probably one of the most unique people; we come in different color, with different hair texture and varies eye colors. And to see people being ignorant and racist against each other over who we are demeans us as a people. We seriously need to stop letting white America racist views dominate us.
By: windmill63. on 20 Aug 08, 00:21:53
i think youre absolutely right its hard to say who has african ancestry or not because nobody knows their genetic history or anything so you never know
By: windmill63. on 20 Aug 08, 00:21:03
yea its a big number but we also represent a wide bunch of colors we are not only blacks or mulattos we come in all colors
By: CF201. on 13 Aug 08, 18:21:36
Windmill63 besides the fact that Cuba and DR have majority Mulatto populations with the Mulatto and Black population @ 30% in PR well thats a big number compared to other Latin American countries not including the obvious countries (DR, Cuba and Brazil). Dont you think?
By: CF201. on 13 Aug 08, 18:16:58
windmill63 I think you almost hit it on the nail but I still claim African ancestry in the population to be @ 40-50% but visibly Afro Caribbean 30% or shall I say 1,200,000 people out 4 mil thats 1/4th or 1 out of every 4 Boricuas are Afro Caribbean with about 1 out three Boricuas having some African admixture. There is a relevant Costizo/mestizo population in the mountainous region of the island. The coastal area is populated with those of more visible African phenotype especially north east.
By: windmill63. on 12 Aug 08, 01:03:15
im not racist or anything but it needs to be heard that puerto rico is not a majority black or mulatto population. cuba and DR have the mulatto majority. its not to say that puerto ricans dont have african ancestry, they do but very far and its not enought to claim full blackness. the majority of puerto ricans "look" white but they are still mixed to a certain degree. there are people theyre you wouldnt think have any african ancestry at all but you dont know how genetics and geneology works
By: windmill63. on 11 Aug 08, 23:55:39
haha i seriously doubt you have been there thats DR where 70 percent of the population is mulatto. not puerto rico i would say its about 30% the rest are whites and castizos
