Well, it was kind of his trademark piece of armor. He lead troops and crushed enemies while wearing it on the battlefield, so I'd say the dungeon master who tortured him left it on ironically or as kind of an insult to show how far he had fallen. As FurryPurryKee stated, guts and company probably didn't remove it cuz of the condition his face was in.
