i lost my son on may 1st 2008 & he was born Feb.13Th 2008 five days before my b-day. he lived 2 months & 18 days. he was a happy baby & loved to smile all the time. i lost my son sept 22nd of 07. He was exsacly 5 months old he was born apr. 22nd. I have never gone threw anything so hard in my life. But I still thank god for lettin me have my son for the 5 months that he was alive. I have absolute sympathy for anyone affected by SIDS. However-- I believe the stress put on the mattress softness, is a bit extreme. James McKenna (pediatrician) has done many studies on infant sleep, and many of them require carbon dioxide to trigger them to breathe, should they stop (as young infants do). In countries in which co-sleeping is the norm, SIDS is far less then in countries where separate sleeping is the norm.

I have the right to have a healthy baby just as you have your right to raise a child with Down Syndrome. You absolutely have no right to tell us what to do with our fetuses. That's off limits. On another note, children with Down syndrome are some of the highest requested children for adoption. I know someone near me that has adopted to children with Down syndrome. I think it is in the way they love unconditionally and have a smile that can make anyone's day better. Some may have mental retardation, but it simply means they learn at a slower pace, people with Down syndrome can offer just as much if not more than "normal" people. Again, I wish you the best with your decision!

ttdean, I know you may be facing a hard decision, so I hope you and your family find the right choice for you. I will say for my family, we have never had to tolorate my daughter, more often than not, we forget she even has Down syndrome and have to remind our selves that she is a child with special needs. Never second guess your strength as a parent. My wife and I are inspired every day by Avery and amazed at how incredible she is. I look back and could not imagine my life without her.

Normal healthy children are work in itself. I have considered ending my pregnancy if my child will have to live a life of mental and physical challenges and defects. There are so many things to consider outside of the financial part of it. For me it's Can I actually tolerate and deal with mental retardation, heart problems, and everything else. I am 41 years old and 11 weeks pregnant. I had my first ultrasound this morning and upon filling out my billing information, I was given a blood test sheet and a pamphlet about DS. I had the ultrasound and the sonographer took it upon herself to go and get the nurse to continue the first trimester screening for DS. No one ever asked me if I wanted the test. I declined the test. Now. I wil have the quadruple blood screening but I will not do the amnio. Having baby number 7 is enough for me.

I will try to answer this without being disrespectful, and I hope it does not come off as disrespectful. "Allocate their parenting resources" is not extendable to disabling a life. A child with a disability is NEVER to expensive if you think with your heart and not with your wallet. I disagree. People do have a right to choose how they wish to allocate their parenting resources. While many people out there would choose to continue a pregnancy where the child has mental or physical limitations, I don't feel it's right to impose my own judgment on anyone else. Some people may not be able to afford the medical and other expense that comes with raising a special-needs child. I wouldn't fault anyone who made the responsible decision not to if they're not capable.

A child with Down syndrome should not be concidered a risk. As a parent of a child with Down syndrome, I would encourage expectant mother's to decline this testing. The reason these screens are pushed on women two to three times a pregnancy within the first trimester is for the option of abortion. My daughter is NOT A RISK, she is a blessing. We as people do not have the right to eliminate or abort a baby because we are affraid of their short falls.

Do you take an infant to the pediatrician? Yes. Does the child "understand" these visits? Of course not, but that doesn't mean there should be no exam. If you would like a list of reasons why, just visit the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and look for information on early childhood caries. There are many pathologic conditions that can be screened for. Many parents don't take their kids at an early age due to ignorance or their own fears.

You are right. No kid opens at age one for a dentist. But, your ignorance on the subject is to be expected. Spend a day in a pediaric dental office and you will see rampant dental cavities each and every day because parents are uneducated as to the proper care of their child. The children are 24 months old and need to be treated in the hospital for extensive decay. And school-aged children miss more days due to tooth related pain than any other illness.
