Oh, stay away from all soy products. Contrary to what the soy lobby says, alot of independent reserch shows that soy is harmful to you. The only viable form of soy is fermented, the way they eat it in the far east. And I also suspect that B12 deficiency in vegans is merely propaganda disseminated by the meat and dairy industry. I'm a vegan athelete too and I only ever had an iron deficiency when I was a child because I didnt eat well. Now I tend to drink red grape juice (mosto) with my meals. Not only do grapes combine with practically everything, but they have shit loads of easily absorbable iron and additionally, mosto is really yummy! I also ferment my own soy yoghurt, doing 3 litres at a time. I drink a large glass of this a day and it provides me with all the B12 necesarry.

Iron is abundant in edible plants. Volume is not usually the issue though. You can get adequate daily iron from a small salad. The issue is absorption and retention. If you are taking iron and not getting enough vitamin C at the same time, then the iron is not utilized. In fact it can build up in tissue instead and cause anemia. Eating seeds and grains with that salad or supplement lowers iron absorption, as do unripe fruits. Also if you do a lot of endurance activity you lose iron.

Nutritional yeast is high in the B vitamins that are already common in vegetables, and lacking (or completely missing) B12. The only brand I know of that specifically includes ingredients for B12 is the redstar vegetarian support one. The only high B12 natural vegetarian food is raw seaweed. Otherwise you get small amounts from veggies that are not skinned. Mono-crop farming is good at killing established soil microorganisms, and that is where B12 comes from.

my blood tests came back saying i was mildly anemic, so iron seemed like a good idea. i know i'm probably lacking. most of the high iron foods aren't vegan, so it's tough for me to get enough of. I've never had low iron levels nor have any of my vegan buddies so I have to assume that is a medical problem, I have a friend that had iron problems on a traditional american food diet and that didn't change for her when she went vegetarian. Everyone needs to take B12 unless they live in a near-wild permaculture society. It has been recommended since the early 70's and it looks like the requirement isn't going to go away since B12 producing bacteria is not very compatible with mono-crop farming

Pretty much just B complex (B12 especially, as you noted). Iron too. I'm a vegan and am mildly anemic -- iron is tough to get enough of if you're vegan. By the way, you can get a ton of B vitamins through nutritional yeast. supplement with those, and with rice protein if you feel you're lacking in protein (which is unlikely), and you should be a-ok. And awesome you're vegan. I wish more people were :)

haha I fainted several months ago. Come on once a week? LOL You definitely need to do it wisely if you want to be veggie or vegan. It can be done though. The first 2-3 weeks are hard, then your body adjusts and it becomes easier. I like the buzz I get from it. I feel lighter and less lethargic. I'm not as concerned with moral code, but I'm losing weight and I was headed down a double chin spiral.

You guys seem really nice, but I think in some situations your to hardcore. Im on my highschool swim team and play competitive soccer. I might take a vitamin in the morning but other then I really dont care what I eat or do. Im at a perfectly fine weight and dont see the sense in everything your saying ... like microwaving egg whites.
